Once the target sample is collected, transfer it to a clean, dry container and make sure the top is sealed tightly. If not being used immediately, the sample can be stored in a refrigerator at about 50°F for up to a week.

Lastly, low-intensity lighting is sufficient for springtails as it should stimulate natural behavior.

Steps to a successful springtail culture

Step 1: Setup the container with substrate.
Obtain soiled or leaf litter and place it in a container. The container should have at least 1 inch of soil.

Add chunky pieces of rotting fruit and vegetables, such as banana skins and apple cores. This will give them something to eat right away if there isn't mold or fungi already present.
Step 3: Mist the substrate.
Mist the soil or litter regularly with dechlorinated water to keep it moist.
Step 4: Add the initial springtail culture.
Add Springtails to the tank, and feed them daily so they have enough to eat.
Step 5: Seal the container.
Keep the lid tightly sealed to maintain airflow, and create small air holes to allow for ventilation.
